Michoacán Launches Drone Reseeding Across 50 Hectares to Restore Wildfire-Damaged Forests

Officials will employ terrain mapping and drones to scatter pregerminated seeds of four native species across 13 fire-scorched sites by August.

Overview

  • Cofom and Secma have kicked off July–August aerial seeding operations that will deliver 200,000 pregerminated seeds to wildfire-scorched terrain across 50 hectares.
  • Earlier this week drone runs dropped 16,000 seeds over 4 hectares in La Cofradía and 24,000 seeds over 6 hectares in Ciudad Hidalgo.
  • Officials chose four native species—Pinus pseudostrobus, Pinus devoniana, Crataegus mexicana and Pinus montezumae—for their suitability to local ecosystems.
  • The statewide campaign aims to plant 10 million trees using drone technology to access remote and difficult terrain more efficiently than traditional methods.
  • Cofom technicians will survey the dispersal zones after three months to assess seedling survival rates projected at around 30 percent.
