Michoacán and Purépecha Communities Certify 8,189 Hectares to Protect Lake Pátzcuaro’s North Shore

The move positions five communities to access restoration funding focused on reforestation, soil conservation, fire prevention.

Overview

  • Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and state environmental officials delivered the conservation certificates in Quiroga on Aug. 20–21, formalizing a protected biocultural corridor on the lake’s northern flank.
  • The certified lands span five communities: Santa Fe de la Laguna (3,263 ha), San Jerónimo Purenchécuaro (2,781), San Andrés Tziróndaro (1,470), Napízaro (500) and Oponguio (175).
  • Authorities detailed planned works that include large-scale reforestation, construction of gabion dams to curb erosion and retain soils, and targeted fire-prevention measures.
  • State programs are available to support the projects, and the governor said federal resources could arrive this year, though the timing and amounts have not been confirmed.
  • Officials said the designations aim to restore the watershed, secure water access and advance sustainable development across municipalities such as Erongarícuaro, Quiroga and Coeneo.
