Michigan Suspends New Beginnings Daycare’s License in Detroit After Safety Probe

Regulators issued an emergency stop order citing unsupervised children, injuries in care and incomplete background checks.

Overview

  • The MiLEAP Child Care Licensing Bureau ordered the center at 15340 Southfield Freeway to stop providing care effective 6 p.m. Nov. 17.
  • The facility is operated by PBA Royal LLC, with Pageant Atterberry and Vanecia Ayers listed as the license holders in the state notice.
  • Investigators detailed a July outing with one teacher for about 20 children after which an 11-year-old walked home unsupervised, and a separate case where his 8-year-old sister left the center barefoot and was found trying to cross a busy street.
  • Authorities reported staff were unable to produce viewable security video and gave differing accounts about how another child was injured, and three teachers were found working without completed background checks on a specific date.
  • Atterberry denied the allegations, said an appeal will be filed, and parents reported receiving a letter from the center describing the closure as a clerical error.
