Michigan State University issued an apology after a picture of Adolf Hitler was used in a pregame trivia quiz displayed on the stadium's video boards prior to a football game. The university blamed the incident on a 'third-party source' and vowed to improve screening and approval processes.
The picture, displayed as part of a quiz question about Hitler's birthplace, was reportedly taken from a YouTube channel called 'The Quiz Channel.' The owner of the channel, Floris van Pallandt, stated Michigan State did not ask for permission to use his quiz content.
Alan Haller, MSU Athletic Director, said that no one in the department viewed the entire pregame quiz video, highlighting a failure in the university's process. An unnamed employee has been suspended with pay pending an investigation.
The quiz creator, Floris van Pallandt, defended the inclusion of Hitler in the trivia question, arguing it was an 'absolutely normal trivia question, shown in an inappropriate setting.' He also confirmed that the university used his content without permission.
After the incident, Michigan State ensured that they will no longer be using the same third-party source for their pregame quiz, and they will implement stronger screening and approval procedures for future content.
