Michigan State Blocked AD's Attempt to Discipline Coach Amid Harassment Allegations

Mel Tucker, former head coach, was fired after investigation into sexual harassment allegations, but may sue the school for wrongful termination.

  • Michigan State's athletic director, Alan Haller, wanted to separate former head coach Mel Tucker from the football program before the 2023 season started, but the university's administration prevented him from doing so.
  • Tucker was fired for cause on Sept. 27, after the university concluded an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against him by anti-rape activist Brenda Tracy.
  • Tucker, who admitted to a 'personal relationship' with Tracy, has denied the accusations. Tracy accused Tucker of nonconsensual masturbating during a phone call.
  • Tucker remained at the helm of the football program until Sept. 10 — nine months after the investigation began — when the university's administration suspended him without pay.
  • Tucker's attorney has alerted Michigan State that Tucker may sue the school for wrongful termination, but he has not yet filed a lawsuit.
