Michigan Sets Feb. 7 Start for Black Lake Sturgeon Season With Six-Fish Cap

Tight rules reflect a cautious harvest designed to protect a slowly recovering, long-lived species.

Overview

  • Fishing runs daily from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., closing when the sixth fish is taken, when five are taken by day’s end, or at 2 p.m. on Feb. 11, with last year’s season ending after 17 minutes.
  • Online registration is required by close of business Friday, Feb. 6, and anglers 17 or older must have a valid Michigan fishing license.
  • Participants must display bright red flags on their shanties for identification by DNR staff, and any harvested sturgeon must be reported immediately on the ice.
  • Each fish must be registered at the DNR trailer at the end of Zollner Road, where personnel may examine internal organs or collect fin tissue for DNA analysis or aging.
  • The start will not be postponed for weather, but the DNR may cancel up to 48 hours in advance for safety and will notify registrants by text, email, and on-ice announcements.
