Michigan Lawmakers Escalate Demands for Proof of Skyline Transgender Eligibility Waiver

The push follows reports of a trans-identifying male on Skyline’s girls team, with no public confirmation that the required annual waiver exists.

Overview

  • Eleven Republican state representatives led by Jason Woolford sent Nov. 21 letters to MHSAA executive director Mark Uyl and Skyline principal Casey Elmore seeking written clarification on eligibility and Title IX compliance.
  • Fourteen GOP representatives previously wrote the MHSAA on Nov. 17 requesting the transgender participation waiver they say should be on file for Skyline’s girls volleyball team.
  • OutKick reports that the MHSAA requires annual waivers for transgender participation and said in September it had not granted any since last fall, while providing no proof that a Skyline waiver was approved.
  • Democratic Rep. Carrie Rheingans said on Fox Detroit that every athlete in the tournament was MHSAA-eligible, a statement she has not backed with documentation in response to follow-up requests reported by OutKick.
  • Rep. Donni Steele says a lobbyist speaking on behalf of the MHSAA indicated documents would not be released until after the season; Skyline’s season ended Nov. 18 with a Division I quarterfinal loss.
