Michigan Hires Kerry Coombs as Special Teams Coordinator

Michigan turns to veteran coach Kerry Coombs to elevate a special teams unit that underperformed this season.

Overview

  • Head coach Sherrone Moore announced the hiring Saturday via an official release welcoming Coombs to lead special teams.
  • The move comes three days after Moore dismissed former special teams coordinator JB Brown.
  • Coombs brings 42 years of coaching experience and most recently oversaw special teams and cornerbacks at Cincinnati from 2022 to 2024.
  • His résumé includes serving as Ohio State’s defensive coordinator in 2020–21 and coaching the Tennessee Titans’ secondary in 2018–19 after earlier duties with OSU’s special teams and cornerbacks.
  • Recognized for recruiting, Coombs was Rivals’ 2017 National Recruiter of the Year and a three-time Big Ten Recruiter of the Year, adding another ex-Ohio State figure to Michigan’s staff after Tony Alford.
