Michigan Hires Former Ohio State Assistant Kerry Coombs as Special Teams Coordinator

The 42-year coaching veteran is tasked with lifting a special-teams unit that struggled throughout 2025.

Overview

  • Michigan announced the hire Saturday, three days after dismissing special-teams coordinator J.B. Brown.
  • Coombs, 64, most recently coordinated special teams and coached cornerbacks at Cincinnati from 2022 to 2024, including a brief interim head-coaching stint in 2022.
  • His career includes two stints at Ohio State — special teams and cornerbacks coach from 2013 to 2017 and defensive coordinator in 2020–21 — plus two seasons with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
  • Michigan highlighted his recruiting pedigree, including 2017 Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year and three Big Ten Recruiter of the Year honors, as well as his role developing multiple first-round NFL cornerbacks.
  • He inherits a group that faltered in returns and punting in 2025, with the Wolverines also needing to replace former kicker Dominic Zvada.
