Michigan Expands Winter Weather Advisory as Heavy Snow Band Shifts South

Localized 6–8 inch totals target the Saginaw Valley with freezing rain glazing parts of southern Lower Michigan.

Overview

  • Roughly 40 counties remain under a National Weather Service advisory from late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon.
  • Grand Rapids and Flint were added to the advisory as forecasts introduced a brief freezing rain risk along the southern edge of the snow.
  • Forecasts now call for 6 to 8 inches from Manistee through Mount Pleasant, Midland, Bay City, Saginaw and into the Thumb, with numerous 7–8 inch reports possible around the Saginaw Valley.
  • From Flint and Grand Rapids southward, 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected with an hour or two of early-morning icing, a mid-morning change to rain, then a return to snow showers as colder air moves back in.
  • Dozens of school districts announced Wednesday closures, and forecasters warn of a slow morning commute with gusty winds and potential refreezing creating icy roads later in the day.
