Michigan Appeals Targeting Ejection of Linebacker Jaishawn Barham

The program has submitted an appeal to avert the automatic first-half suspension under NCAA rules.

Overview

  • Barham was ejected in the third quarter of Michigan’s 34-17 season-opening win over New Mexico after a replay review ruled his hit on quarterback Jack Layne was targeting.
  • The ruling erased a defensive fumble-return touchdown and awarded New Mexico a first down on the drive that ended in a Lobos touchdown.
  • Under NCAA procedure, the ejection currently requires Barham to sit the first half of next week’s game at Oklahoma unless the appeal is successful.
  • Head coach Sherrone Moore said postgame that Michigan disagreed with the call and would work through the Big Ten to challenge the decision.
  • With Barham out, inside linebackers Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan logged extended snaps, with Sullivan recording five tackles, a sack and an interception and Rolder adding four tackles including one for loss.
