Michigan's Attorney General Dana Nessel has dropped charges against James Renner, one of the 16 Republicans who falsely claimed Donald Trump won the state's 2020 presidential election, as part of a cooperation deal.
The agreement sees Renner potentially serving as a witness in future legal proceedings against other Republicans involved in the false elector plot.
Renner and the other 15 accused Republicans signed certificates in December 2020 falsely stating that they were 'duly elected and qualified electors' for Michigan and that they had cast the state’s 16 electoral votes for Trump. However, the certificates were disregarded and are now subject to various investigations.
Renner's dropped charges may pave the way for Georgia-style criminal proceedings against more Trump supporters involved in alleged election tampering.
Charges still remain pending against the other 15 of the 16 false electors, thus Renner's cooperation could potentially implicate these individuals in future legal proceedings.
