Overview

  • King was activated from the 60-day injured list Saturday to make his first MLB start since May 18, ending a layoff caused by a thoracic nerve injury in his right shoulder.
  • Medical examinations found no structural damage, allowing King to resume throwing in late June, complete a simulated outing in July and record five strikeouts over 3⅓ innings in a 61-pitch Triple-A rehab start.
  • The Padres cleared a rotation spot by optioning JP Sears to Triple-A, and manager Mike Shildt plans to cap King’s pitch count as he joins Dylan Cease, Nick Pivetta and Yu Darvish for the weekend series against the Red Sox.
  • San Diego augmented its roster at the trade deadline by adding arms like Mason Miller and retaining Cease and Pivetta, underscoring the importance of King’s return for the team’s playoff push.
  • Before his injury, King logged a 2.59 ERA with 64 strikeouts over ten starts and served as both Opening Day and postseason Game 1 starter for the Padres.
