Miami Beach Drops 11 Concrete Cars as Reefline’s Underwater Art Park Gets Underway

The first phase is slated to finish by late October with snorkelers able to visit starting in November.

Overview

  • Crews placed 11 of 22 Leandro Erlich–designed units near Fourth Street, forming the start of an underwater “traffic jam.”
  • The remaining 11 cars are scheduled for deployment toward the end of October, completing the initial nearshore installation.
  • The site sits roughly 700 feet off Miami Beach in 15 to 20 feet of water, allowing access by swimmers without a boat.
  • More than 2,000 locally grown soft corals from Coral Morphologic nurseries will be transplanted onto the marine-grade concrete to create habitat.
  • Backed by a $5 million city bond, organizers are raising an additional $6 million for phase one and targeting $40 million for the multi-year, seven-mile buildout.
