MHA Names Shri Singh Special Prosecutor for Pahalgam Massacre Case

The move comes as the NIA finalizes a chargesheet following disclosures by two arrested facilitators.

Overview

  • The NIA is set to file a chargesheet soon that will name Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pahalgam residents Parvez Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar.
  • The Home Ministry’s notification appoints Shri Singh to represent the NIA before the NIA Special Court in Jammu and the J&K and Ladakh High Court for up to three years or until the trial concludes.
  • Interrogation of the two arrested locals produced a key breakthrough by identifying the assailants as Pakistani nationals affiliated with Lashkar-e-Taiba.
  • The attackers have been named as Suleman/Suleiman Shah (alias Faizal Jatt), Abu Hamza/Hamza Afghani (alias Afghan), and Yasir (alias Jibran), all killed by security forces on July 28 in the Dachigam forest.
  • The April 22 assault at Baisaran meadow killed 25 tourists and a pony operator, and investigators say they are still tracing remaining module members and cross-border handlers as a court-allowed probe extension runs out this week.
