MHA Creates Ex-Agniveer Wing, Cites Cabinet Mandate for Post-Service Coordination

Opposition leaders questioned why Home Affairs, not Defence, is directing the transition of Agniveers.

Overview

  • In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said coordination of ex-Agniveers has been allocated to the Home Ministry under Cabinet Secretariat notification S.O.2701(E) dated June 16, 2025.
  • He said a dedicated ex-Agniveer wing and an ex-Agniveer cell have been established to handle coordination, monitoring and rehabilitation policy for departing personnel.
  • Rahul Gandhi asked the government to explain the basis for giving MHA this role and whether potential overlap with the Defence Ministry had been assessed.
  • The ministry referenced the Allocation of Business Rules in its response and did not elaborate on the rationale for MHA’s lead, as characterised by The Hindu.
  • Separately, the Home Ministry notified a 50% reservation for ex-Agniveers in vacant BSF constable posts and has decided to raise Group C reservations across CAPFs to 50% from 10%, as reported.
