Meyiwa Trial: Judge Clears Cross-Examination on Disputed Statement as State Presses Zungu

A ruling to allow questions on a disputed statement puts the defence witness’s credibility under scrutiny.

Overview

  • The Pretoria High Court authorized the state to question Sifiso “Gwabini” Zungu about a prior statement in which he allegedly implicated accused Bongani Ntanzi.
  • Zungu rejected the statement and told the court it was extracted through police assault and intimidation, an allegation the judge described as serious.
  • Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng indicated police officers implicated in the alleged assault may be called to explain what occurred.
  • Cross-examination is continuing, with prosecutor Adv. George Baloyi highlighting contradictions, including Zungu’s shifting claim that R2,000 or R3,000 was paid to officers before his release in 2020.
  • Five men remain on trial for the 2014 killing of Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa at a Vosloorus home, with proceedings drawing intense public attention nearly 12 years on.
