Mexico's Profeco Orders Inspections for 38,000 Volkswagen and Seat Cars Over Takata Airbag Risk

Manufacturers are offering free fixes with updated recall windows running into 2026.

Overview

  • Profeco called for checks on 37,972 Volkswagen vehicles due to a driver-side Takata airbag component that may shed metal filaments upon deployment.
  • Affected Volkswagen models include Passat (2012–2015), Passat CC (2016–2017), Crafter (2015–2016), Multivan (2015), NBB (2012–2018), Tiguan (2015–2017) and Transporter (2015).
  • An additional 380 Seat units are included, specifically León 2017, Toledo 2018 and Ateca 2018, for the same driver airbag risk.
  • A separate alert covers 23 Tiguan Comfortline 2019 units for a Joyson head-airbag inflator that could rupture and expel metal fragments.
  • The campaigns update prior notices 79/2023 and 9/2023, with an October 25 scope adjustment, and refine alert 27/2024 from 162 to 23 units, with free repairs available through published recall pages and contacts.
