Mexico’s Navy Unveils ‘Generación FIFA’ Canine Program for 2026 World Cup Security

The initiative follows a multi-phase zootecnia training regimen to ready five litters for explosive detection at major ports and airports next year.

Overview

  • In early August 2025 the Secretaría de Marina-Armada de México publicly introduced five litters of primarily Belgian Malinois-type puppies under the ‘Generación FIFA’ banner.
  • The training encompasses four structured phases—socialization, atractor, fijación and marcaje—with maternal socialization forming the foundation of each puppy’s development.
  • Handlers including Cabo Fabián, Marinera Reyes and Marinero Ixtla lead the hands-on conditioning and selection process for the canine teams.
  • Once certified, the dogs will operate at key entry points such as Mexico City airports and seaports to screen for explosives during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
  • The launch integrates with counterterrorism exercises and trilateral security planning involving Mexico, the United States and Canada that began in 2022.
