Mexico’s Marriages Keep Falling as Divorces Recede Slightly, Inegi Reports for 2024

Later unions with stark regional gaps define the new baseline.

  • Mexico registered 486,645 civil marriages in 2024, a 3% decline from 2023, equal to 5.4 marriages per 1,000 adults.
  • The average age at marriage rose to 32.1 for women and 35.0 for men, extending a decade-long shift toward later unions.
  • Divorces totaled 161,932 in 2024, about 3% below the 2022 peak, yielding 33.3 divorces for every 100 marriages.
  • Regional disparities persisted: Quintana Roo led marriage rates at 7.7 per 1,000, Mexico City and Tlaxcala were lowest at 3.4, and Campeche topped divorce levels with 4.89 per 1,000 and 69.7 per 100 marriages.
  • Same-sex unions reached 6,312 (about 1.3% of marriages), with 439 divorces between women and 244 between men, while child marriages fell to seven cases nationwide.
