Mexico's Mandatory Mobile Registry Launches as Users Confront Early Portal Glitches

Lines that are not linked to a verified holder by June 30 will be suspended starting July 1 with only emergency calling available.

Overview

  • Effective January 9, all active mobile numbers—prepaid and postpaid, SIM and eSIM—must be tied to an individual via CURP or to a company via RFC, with up to 10 lines allowed per person.
  • Carriers offer in-person and online enrollment; remote registration includes ID validation and a selfie and typically permits only three attempts before requiring an advisor or a visit to a customer center.
  • Telcel reported high demand and intermittent failures on its registration portal and will launch a Portal de Consulta on February 7 for users to verify lines associated with their CURP or RFC.
  • AT&T and Movistar support full online registration, Unefón requires advisor-assisted enrollment via SMS or phone, and foreign users must register with a valid passport or a temporary CURP.
  • Authorities state that only the name, phone number and CURP are stored under data-protection rules, users receive a registration folio as proof, and suspended postpaid lines may continue to incur charges.
