Mexico’s Mandatory Mobile-Line Registry Launches as Users Report Telcel Site Flaw

Officials say linking numbers to CURP is meant to curb extortion through verified ID checks.

Overview

  • Nationwide registration began January 9 with a June 30, 2026 deadline, and unregistered lines will be suspended from July 1 with only emergency and official calls allowed while many plans continue billing.
  • The rules cover prepaid and postpaid service on SIM and eSIM, allow up to 10 lines per CURP, require RFC for companies, and accept a valid passport or temporary CURP for foreign residents.
  • Carriers offer online and in-person workflows; remote registration typically requires an ID, CURP and, in some cases, a selfie ‘proof of life,’ with only three online attempts before switching to advisor-assisted or in-person processing.
  • Users flagged a Telcel web flaw allegedly exposing personal data in page code; Telcel said customer information is secure, access is controlled by unique SMS codes and additional safeguards have been implemented.
  • A public Portal de Consulta to check which numbers are linked to a CURP or RFC is scheduled to open February 7, initially for Telcel customers.
