Mexico’s Labor Law Reforms Take Effect as SEP Adds Week to Summer Break

The strengthened Federal Labor Law guarantees progressive paid vacations with a minimum 25% bonus after one year of service, coinciding with SEP’s shift of the 2025–2026 school start to September 1 for a longer summer holiday.

Overview

  • The January 1, 2023 Vacaciones Dignas reform doubled first-year leave to 12 days and established a progressive schedule rising to 20 days by year four, with additional increases every five years thereafter.
  • Employers must pay a vacation bonus equivalent to at least 25% of salary for all statutory vacation days.
  • Workers under formal employment can request paid summer leave after completing one year of service, although student holiday dates are not mandatory rest days for employees.
  • Basic-education students will observe summer holiday from July 17 to August 31, 2025, and the 2025–2026 school year will now begin on September 1, extending the break by one week.
  • Remaining mandatory labor rest days for 2025 include September 16 (Independence), November 17 (Revolution anniversary) and December 25 (Christmas).
