Mexico’s Homicides Fall 32% as August Marks Lowest Level Since 2015

Extortion was the only high‑impact crime to increase in 2025, according to SESNSP.

Overview

  • SESNSP reported an average of 59.2 homicide victims per day in August, down from 86.9 in September 2024, extending an 11‑month downward trend.
  • Twenty‑eight states reduced their daily homicide averages, with declines above 50% in Zacatecas, San Luis Potosí, Quintana Roo, Nuevo León, Querétaro and Tlaxcala.
  • About 51% of cases are concentrated in seven states—Guanajuato, Chihuahua, Baja California, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Guerrero and Michoacán—with Sinaloa facing a cartel‑driven crisis cited by local monitors.
  • Federal authorities reported more than 32,400 arrests, 245 tonnes of drugs seized, over 16,000 firearms secured and roughly 1,400 labs dismantled since October 1, with 1,669 detentions and 53 labs disabled in the past two weeks.
  • Extortion complaints rose about 21.3% from January to August 2025, even as other high‑impact crimes showed declines.
