Mexico’s Gun Buyback Collects 6,420 Firearms Since January, Segob Says

The voluntary program is framed as a prevention-focused security measure carried out with the Army alongside the Catholic Church.

  • Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez reported the national tally of 6,420 surrendered firearms, covering Jan. 10 to the present, during the morning press conference.
  • Of the weapons turned in, authorities counted 1,967 long guns, 3,809 handguns and 644 grenades.
  • Participants also handed over 438,619 rounds of ammunition, 10,910 magazines, 15 sticks of dynamite, 85,014 detonator caps and 245 fuses.
  • A separate exchange collected 5,821 warlike toys, which were swapped for educational items to encourage a culture of peace among children and adolescents.
  • Recent collection modules operated in Tlaquepaque from Sept. 8–13 and in Guadalupe from Sept. 22–26, with the next event scheduled for Oct. 14 in Apodaca, Nuevo León.
