Mexico’s First Fully Electric Bus Begins Trial on Morelia Periférico

State transport agencies will monitor performance through July 31 to guide a fleet replacement program under Article 47 of the federal mobility law.

Overview

  • The two-week pilot runs July 16–31 on Morelia’s Periférico and Circuito Gris routes.
  • Authorities will assess energy consumption, operating costs, and passenger experience in real-world conditions.
  • Taruk delivers zero emissions with a 300–350 km range per charge, 2–4 hour recharging, 28 seats and standing room for up to 70 riders.
  • Developed by MF Vehículos Eléctricos and Dina Camiones with backing from the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies, Taruk uses over 70% locally sourced components.
  • Pilot data will inform Michoacán’s planned fleet modernization program, featuring scrappage bonuses for aging public buses.
