Overview
- INEGI’s preliminary count for January–March 2025 recorded 211,894 deaths, which is 1,445 fewer than in the same period of 2024.
- Leading causes were heart disease (51,382), diabetes mellitus (30,578) and malignant tumors (23,678), followed by influenza and pneumonia (about 11,100) and liver diseases (about 10,100).
- People aged 65 and older accounted for roughly 59.7% of all registered deaths, reflecting the heavy burden in older adults.
- Among those 25–44, homicides were the top cause for men, whereas malignant tumors led among women, with accidents and heart disease also significant in these age groups.
- Separate reporting on 1998–2023 identified 735 deaths across eight extremely rare causes seen as sentinel events for system gaps, while experts cited obesity and ultraprocessed diets as key upstream risks behind leading diseases.
