Mexico’s Cold Front 28 Drives Freezing Temps, Intense Southern Rains and Hazardous ‘Norte’ Winds

Authorities issue alerts for dangerous flooding, landslides, damaging gusts.

Overview

  • Mexico’s weather service reports the polar air mass linked to Cold Front 28 now covers most of the country, bringing very cold dawns with frost in the highlands, including minima of -15 to -10 °C in parts of Chihuahua and Durango and subzero readings in several central and northern states.
  • Forecasts call for very heavy to intense rainfall in Chiapas and Tabasco (75–150 mm), strong totals in Veracruz and Oaxaca, and additional showers across the Gulf region, the Yucatán Peninsula and central areas.
  • A strong Norte is expected with wind gusts of 80–100 km/h across the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, 60–80 km/h along Veracruz, and hazardous seas of about 3.5–4.5 m in Tehuantepec and 2–3 m on Gulf coasts.
  • Officials warn of rapid river rises, urban flooding, landslides, dense fog reducing visibility and wind damage to trees and signage; Baja California also faces strong winds and mountain lows near -5 °C.
  • Concurrent alerts abroad note Argentina’s SMN warnings for severe storms with hail and gusts potentially above 90 km/h in Mendoza and nearby regions, and AEMET forecasts a wet, windy day in parts of Galicia, Spain.
