Mexico’s Biometric CURP Takes Effect as National ID, With Pilots Underway and IMSS Limiting App Biometrics

Enrollment remains voluntary during the pilot phase, with IMSS Digital using only a fingerprint and a face scan.

Overview

  • In force since October 16 per the Diario Oficial, the biometric CURP is recognized as an official identity document on par with the INE credential and passport.
  • Enrollment is being carried out in person at civil registry offices and 145 Renapo modules, with appointments available through Renapo and select remote processing possible via Llave MX when prior biometrics exist.
  • Authorities say the update is not yet compulsory, though coverage indicates more services are likely to request the biometric CURP and broader requirements are anticipated in 2026.
  • Required documents commonly include a certified birth certificate, current government ID, the traditional CURP, recent proof of address, and an active email, with reported processing around 20 minutes and free in some local pilots such as Veracruz.
  • The IMSS confirmed a DOF-backed program and says its app will validate users with just one fingerprint and facial recognition, keeping in-person alternatives for those who need them.
