Mexico's Banks to Activate User-Set Transfer Caps Oct. 1 Ahead of Default Limit

The CNBV’s MTU gives customers control over maximum digital transfer amounts to strengthen fraud defenses.

Overview

  • Users have until September 30 to set their MTU or they will receive a default cap of 1,500 UDIS, roughly 12,800 pesos at current values.
  • The MTU applies to digital operations such as SPEI, CoDi and Dimo within banking apps or online platforms, not to in-branch transactions or physical card purchases.
  • Transfers that exceed the configured limit, including incoming deposits, can be rejected until the customer updates the MTU or completes additional verification.
  • Banks must enable the MTU tool by October 1, present a suggested limit, and allow free, immediate changes per operation, day, week or month with two-factor authentication.
  • The requirement covers institutions of banca múltiple; many fintechs and sofipos, including Nu and Mercado Pago, are not yet obligated under the transitory regime.
