Mexico’s Banks Switch On User-Set Transfer Caps October 1

Unconfigured accounts receive a temporary 1,500 UDI cap to reduce digital fraud.

Overview

  • September 30 is the final day for customers to set their own per‑transfer limit, with banks required to have the MTU controls active starting October 1.
  • Transfers that exceed a user’s cap will be paused or require additional authentication, and the cap applies to each operation rather than to daily or monthly totals.
  • If no limit is set, institutions will apply a default of 1,500 UDIs (about 12,500–12,800 pesos) through year‑end or may assign a cap based on a six‑month transaction profile.
  • The rule covers digital channels such as SPEI, CoDi, Dimo and service or card payments, while Level‑1 accounts are excluded from MTU requirements.
  • Implementation differs by institution, with Banamex enabling configuration on October 1 and some fintechs like Mercado Pago and Nu currently outside the requirement; users face no fines for not configuring but may see delays or blocks on over‑limit transfers.
