Mexico’s Asylum Claims Hold Steady in 2025 as U.S. Tightens Border Policies

New U.S. restrictions have narrowed legal routes to the north, increasing pressure on Mexico’s asylum system.

Overview

  • COMAR counted 58,800 asylum applications from January through September 2025, virtually matching 58,644 in the same period of 2024.
  • Cubans led this year’s applicants, followed by Venezuelans and Haitians, with officials noting a growing share of arrivals from African countries.
  • ACNUR says half of 2025 cases were processed in Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz and Mexico City, reflecting where entry and services are concentrated.
  • ACNUR reports that 66% of newcomers say they intend to stay in Mexico, against a five-year backdrop of roughly 500,000 requests and recognition rates above 60%.
  • Since January 20, President Trump has deployed National Guard units, moved to expand the border wall and suspended CBP One appointments, while U.S. raids have detained hundreds prior to deportation.
