Overview

  • The Finance Ministry raised the simplified import rate from 19% to 33.5% in rules published July 28 in the DOF, taking effect August 15.
  • The charge applies to shipments from countries without a trade deal with Mexico, such as China, affecting purchases on Temu, Shein and AliExpress.
  • Walmart México updated its imports page to state a 33.5% general rate for all origins and to outline preferential treatment for U.S. and Canada under T‑MEC.
  • For T‑MEC origins, parcels under $50 are exempt from IGI and IVA apart from DTA, purchases of $50 to $117 face 17%, and values above $117 are charged 19%.
  • Couriers and postal operators, including SEPOMEX, are collecting the duty, and media estimate a 1,000‑peso China order now totals about 1,335 pesos under the new rate.
