Mexico’s 210 Major Reservoirs Reach 50% Capacity After 2025 Rains

Conagua warns that uneven rainfall distribution could reverse storage gains without upgrades to water infrastructure.

Overview

  • By Aug. 10–11, the 210 principal reservoirs held 63,029 million m³ of water, lifting average storage from 44% in early June to 50% of capacity.
  • The Sistema Cutzamala’s three key reservoirs averaged 64.8% (506.79 Mm³), a 28.3% increase over the same date in 2024 that eases Mexico City’s supply pressures.
  • Of the 210 reservoirs, 27 are full, 65 hold between 75% and 100%, and 56 range from 50% to 75%, highlighting persistent regional variability.
  • Conagua’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional recorded 386.8 mm of rainfall from Jan. 1 to Aug. 10, about 1.4% above the historical average for that period.
  • Officials reaffirm commitments under the National Water Rights Agreement to maintain monitoring and encourage responsible use to sustain the recovery.
