Mexico's 2026 Minimum Wage Takes Effect With 13% National Rise, 5% in Border Zone

Only workers at the legal floor are entitled to immediate adjustments by law.

Overview

  • The new floors are 315.04 pesos per day nationwide and 440.87 pesos in the Zona Libre de la Frontera Norte, effective January 1.
  • About 8.5 million workers are expected to receive the increase directly, including more than 2.2 million reported in Michoacán.
  • The legal obligation covers only employees earning at or below the minimum, so many above-minimum salaries will not change in the first January paycheck.
  • Workers who qualify but do not see the adjustment are advised to seek help from labor authorities such as Profedet or state conciliation centers.
  • Analysts report modest inflation effects so far but caution that sustaining higher minimums in the border region will test productivity, small businesses, and competitiveness as the government targets purchasing power of 2.5 basic baskets by 2030.
