Mexico Warns of Busy 2026 Hurricane Season With Pacific Leading Risk

Officials say El Niño is likely to tilt risk toward Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Overview

  • Mexico’s weather service projects 29 to 36 tropical systems across both basins in 2026, including 5 to 7 major hurricanes rated Category 3 to 5.
  • The Pacific is forecast to produce 18 to 21 systems with 4 to 5 major hurricanes, while the Atlantic is expected to see 11 to 15 systems with 1 to 2 majors.
  • SMN puts the odds of an El Niño shift at 61% between May and July, which could strengthen into the August to October peak and favor more Pacific storms.
  • Federal and state authorities convened a national civil protection meeting with more than 1,200 participants to boost monitoring, early alerts, river cleanup, slope stabilization, and training.
  • The season opens May 15 in the Pacific and June 1 in the Atlantic and runs to November 30, with Amanda and Arthur topping the name lists and with even one landfall capable of severe flooding, landslides, and dangerous surf.
