Mexico Warns of Torrential Rains in the South as a New Cold Front Nears the Northwest

Civil protection urges precautions because saturated ground and strong northerlies present flood, landslide and marine risks.

Overview

  • SMN/CONAGUA forecasts for November 13 call for torrential rain of 150–250 mm in southern Quintana Roo with very heavy totals in eastern Campeche.
  • Northerly gusts of 70–80 km/h are expected in Oaxaca and the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec in Chiapas, with waves of 2–3 m in the Tehuantepec Gulf and 1.5–2.5 m along Quintana Roo’s coast, and possible waterspouts.
  • A cold spell persists across northern and central Mexico, with minimums from −10°C to 5°C in mountainous zones of more than 20 states and morning frosts in highlands.
  • Front No. 14 is forecast to approach Baja California overnight, bringing isolated rain, strong gusts and further temperature drops in the northwest.
  • In Hidalgo, authorities reported three landslides and precautionary evacuations after Front No. 13; rainfall stayed below 20 mm and in-person classes resumed except at severely affected schools.
