Overview
- Semarnat and Cofepris launched the free Playas MX app in mid-July for iOS and Android, consolidating monitoring across 289 recreational beaches in all 17 coastal states
- Summer 2025 tests involved 2,355 samples at 393 points and found that 94.46% of beaches meet WHO standards for enterococci levels and safe swimming
- Users can view real-time enterococci measurements alongside sanitary alerts, environmental recommendations, service availability, accessibility details and warning flags
- Contested non-compliant sites such as those in Michoacán are undergoing joint federal–state retesting after initial flags indicated elevated bacterial levels
- Results will be updated each vacation period to ensure transparency, guide public health decisions and support sustainable tourism
