Mexico Unveils 'Café Bienestar' to Support Small Growers With 100% Mexican Coffee

The program channels direct state purchasing to largely indigenous producers to deliver fair payment through the Tiendas del Bienestar network.

Overview

  • President Claudia Sheinbaum and Alimentación para el Bienestar chief María Luisa Albores launched Café Bienestar, citing 6,646 participating producers, an initial investment of 59.4 million pesos and about 913.56 tonnes acopiados.
  • Sales run through Tiendas del Bienestar with three presentations priced at 35 pesos (50 g), 65 pesos (90 g) and 110 pesos (205 g), starting in CDMX, Estado de México, Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala before a phased national rollout.
  • Officials say the product is 100% coffee with no additives, sweeteners, flavorings or colorants, using a blend dominated by pergamino and natural arábica with a small portion of robusta from shade-grown systems.
  • Authorities highlight that most of the coffee comes from La Montaña de Guerrero, many beneficiaries are women, and a significant share is linked to the Sembrando Vida program.
  • Most reports describe the current offer as soluble coffee and note plans to build a plant for instant production, though one outlet reported it as ground, reflecting a format detail that remains inconsistent in coverage.
