Mexico Unveils 2030 Biodiversity Roadmap to Reach 30% Protection

The plan sets 76 actions prioritizing inclusive governance through a new registry that recognizes conservation beyond formal protected areas.

Overview

  • Semarnat, with Conanp, presented the roadmap in collaboration with WWF and the Global Environment Facility.
  • Mexico aims to add at least 15 million hectares of protected areas across federal, state and municipal jurisdictions over the next five years.
  • The roadmap establishes Renom, a national registry to identify, recognize, monitor and evaluate Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures.
  • The initiative was shaped with participation from Indigenous and Afro‑Mexican communities, academia, civil society, youth and the private sector.
  • Officials floated market-based instruments and compensation from major polluters as potential financing options, as current protection stands near 24% of marine areas and 14.4% of land.
