Mexico to Provide 2 Million Free Eyeglasses to Primary Students This School Year

The program follows school health screenings that found vision problems in four of every ten primary pupils.

Overview

  • The SEP initiative, Ver para soñar, will distribute glasses nationwide to public primary school children during the 2025–2026 academic year.
  • Education Secretary Mario Delgado said the deliveries aim to cover practically all students who need corrective lenses so learning is not hindered.
  • Families who received school health reports are instructed to visit clinics for a second optometrist evaluation before receiving free glasses.
  • Officials place the effort within the Vive saludable, vive feliz strategy and the Vida Saludable axis of the Nueva Escuela Mexicana as a learning-equity measure.
  • Early recipients report better reading and classroom participation, and the underlying screenings launched March 12 to assess 12 million children in 90,832 public primaries with IMSS support.
