• For the first time, Mexico will use Cell Broadcast technology to send text and sound alerts to over 80 million mobile devices free of charge and without requiring internet or phone credit.
• The test message—“ESTO ES UN SIMULACRO. Este es un mensaje para probar la funcionalidad del Sistema Nacional de Alertas del Gobierno de México”—will trigger a distinctive tone even if phones are muted.
• Authorities have finalized agreements with major carriers and digital agencies, and are conducting device compatibility checks and public registrations ahead of the nationwide test.
• The new cellular alert system will complement existing sirens, radio, television and social media and can target warnings for hazards from hurricanes and floods to volcanic eruptions and wildfires.
