Mexico Sets Sept. 19 National Drill With First Nationwide Cell‑Broadcast Phone Alert

Officials will debut a nationwide cell‑broadcast alert to reach users beyond loudspeaker coverage.

Overview

  • The exercise is scheduled for Friday at 12:00 (central) using an 8.1‑magnitude earthquake scenario centered near Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, with parallel drills for hurricanes, tsunamis or urban fires in selected states.
  • The new Mass Alerting System will target roughly 80 million mobile devices via cell broadcast, delivering an on‑screen message with a distinct sound even if phones are locked or on silent, without apps or internet.
  • Devices will display the test text: “Este es un mensaje para probar el Sistema Nacional de Alertas del Gobierno de México, como parte del simulacro nacional llevado a cabo el día 19/09/2025,” with some iPhones potentially labeling it as a presidential alert.
  • Alerts will also go out through about 14,491 SASMEX speakers, around 100 AM/FM radio stations and 11 TV networks, alongside Mexico City’s C5 network of roughly 27,880 speakers.
  • Authorities report more than 9 million registered participants across 125,858 buildings, have published iOS/Android setup steps and a help line (079), and cite an April trial with about 98% tower coverage.
