Mexico Sets Sept. 19 National Drill to Test 8.1 Quake Scenario and Cell-Phone Alerts

Coastal states will also run a hurricane scenario to broaden the readiness test.

Overview

  • The Segundo Simulacro Nacional 2025 is scheduled for Sept. 19 at 12:00 CST, using an 8.1‑magnitude earthquake hypothesis centered off Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán at 15 km depth with specified coordinates.
  • Authorities will activate 14,491 public loudspeakers nationwide and conduct Mexico’s first nationwide seismic alert test via cell phones by presidential instruction.
  • Mexico City plans to deploy about 5,000 government officials for the exercise, and the capital reports more than 13,000 seismic speakers with functionality reported up to 99%.
  • The Education Ministry says classes will not be suspended that day, and buildings and institutions can register to participate until Sept. 18 at 11:59.
  • At least 17 coastal states will incorporate a hurricane scenario as part of the multi‑hazard drill.
