Mexico Sets Plan to Boost Wind Capacity 84% by 2030

The government says the expansion will raise renewables to over 38% of power by 2030 through new wind projects, battery storage, hydro flexibility and faster approvals.

  • The Energy Ministry (Sener) has adopted an official target to raise installed wind capacity by about 84% to roughly 15,000 MW by 2030 by adding 6,860 MW of new onshore capacity.
  • Of the planned 6,860 MW, Sener says 4,701 MW have been assigned to 17 wind plants while 2,159 MW remain pending allocation under the government plan.
  • The state utility CFE has awarded eight mixed‑scheme wind projects totaling 2,949 MW that include roughly 890 MW of battery storage and are planned to enter service in 2029–2030 in Nuevo León and Tamaulipas.
  • Sener is rolling out faster permitting and social‑impact tools, including a single window for 0.7–20 MW self‑consumption projects and a fully digital Manifestación de Impacto Social del Sector Energético (MISSE) coordinated with CENACE and CFE.
  • Officials and industry leaders say the buildout is meant to boost system reliability through solar–wind–hydro complementarity and to spawn a domestic wind value chain making turbines, blades, towers and services that could support industrial demand and jobs.
