Mexico Sets Oct. 16 Start for Nationwide Biometric CURP Enrollment

Registrations are free and voluntary, with public and private entities obliged to accept the new ID.

Overview

  • After pilot runs in Mexico City, Estado de México and Veracruz, citizens across all states can begin enrolling for the biometric CURP on October 16.
  • The credential adds a photo, fingerprints, iris scans and an electronic signature to the traditional CURP, with records managed in a Plataforma Única de Identidad coordinated by the Interior Ministry and the digital transformation agency.
  • Enrollment is available at RENAPO modules and civil registry offices and, for some users with existing INE or SAT records, through the Llave MX platform at no cost.
  • Pilot modules report the capture process takes only minutes and initial recipients receive a digital file, while the centralized platform is slated to be in place by mid‑October and a minors’ biometric program must be set up by November 13.
  • Institutions must accept the biometric CURP from the start of registrations, they have 90 days to adapt systems, there are no fines for non‑enrolling citizens, and the traditional CURP remains valid until an expected shift to broader mandatory use around February 2026.
