Mexico Sets Oct. 16 Launch for Biometric CURP, With 145 Modules Ready

Authorities call the initial phase voluntary, with mandatory acceptance set for February 2026.

Overview

  • RENAPO says 145 capture sites across the country will begin voluntary enrollment on Oct. 16, complemented by a Llave MX option for people whose biometrics already exist with INE, SAT or SRE.
  • Early users at pilot centers report the in‑person capture takes only minutes and ends with a confirmation sent by email that includes a downloadable PDF and QR validation.
  • Applicants are being asked for a certified birth certificate, valid photo ID, their current CURP, proof of address and an active email, with appointments required at some locations such as the Juárez module in Mexico City.
  • The credential keeps the 18‑character CURP and adds a photo, fingerprints, iris scans and an electronic signature to enable verification for banking, health, education and digital services.
  • Institutions must integrate the format by 2026 or face fines of 10,000–20,000 UMAs, while cybersecurity experts urge strong encryption, database segmentation and real‑time monitoring to protect centralized data.
