Overview
- Issuance begins nationwide on October 16, when government agencies, public institutions and private organizations must accept the biometric CURP for official identification.
- Authorities, including Segob and the president, state that obtaining the upgraded credential is voluntary, and existing INE voter IDs remain valid.
- RENAPO lists 145 capture modules across civil registries, RENAPO offices and Segob sites, with an online option via Llave MX for people whose biometrics are already on file with agencies such as INE, SAT or SRE.
- The credential adds fingerprints from both hands, iris scans, a digital photograph and an electronic signature to standard CURP data, and the government says it carries the same validity as an INE or a passport.
- RENAPO’s director says issuance could become mandatory by February 2026, and applicants typically need a certified birth certificate, traditional CURP, official photo ID, recent proof of address, an email and a phone number.
