Mexico Seizes 81,000 Counterfeit Sports Items in Tepito Raid Ahead of World Cup

The action signals a wider crackdown designed to block fake gear tied to the 2026 tournament.

Overview

  • IMPI inspectors, backed by Mexico City police and the Navy, seized 80,973 items Thursday in Tepito worth about 15.3 million pesos from 15 shops and four warehouses.
  • The haul included jerseys, balls and other gear with FIFA marks and major brands such as Adidas, Nike, Puma, Umbro and Jordan, weighing roughly 25 tonnes.
  • Most goods were of Asian origin and sellers could not show legal proof of purchase, so the items are now in IMPI custody for review and possible destruction.
  • No arrests were reported because IMPI handles administrative enforcement, and the agency said it will seek the property owners and may close businesses tied to the sales.
  • The raid is part of Operación Limpieza, which IMPI says has run 21 actions in 11 states with about 950.1 million pesos in seizures, following a new IMPI–customs pact and plans for ongoing checks near stadiums after complaints from FIFA and pressure tied to U.S. IP reviews.
