Mexico Reports September Rise in Feminicides as 2,120 Women Killed This Year

The SESNSP update spotlights wide disparities in how states classify killings of women.

  • Authorities logged 65 feminicides in September, up from 45 in August, according to the Oct. 25 SESNSP release.
  • Through September, 2,120 women were killed nationwide, with 513 cases classified as feminicide and 1,607 as intentional homicide.
  • The State of Mexico leads in feminicides with 42 cases, followed by Sinaloa with 39, Chihuahua with 35, and Mexico City with 30.
  • Municipal hotspots include Culiacán with 22 cases after a month-to-month jump of 10, along with Juárez with 14 and Tijuana with 11.
  • Guanajuato recorded the most intentional homicides of women with 266 and 276 total female victims this year, while Nuevo León reported 75 total deaths with only 9 classified as feminicide and 8 women killed in September.
